I have only found a couple artisans who create these in Hawaii besides myself (and sell for much more money!)
Processs: Creating this piece is a very time-consuming, and detailed process. I purchase rare sunrise shells or chips (from a Hawaiian diver on the North Shore of Oahu) that aren't worthy of being a statement piece on its own. Each shell is not inexpensive so I am very careful in creating with them.
- clean with a special vinegar solution with heavy rubber gloves and wire brush
- carefully deconstructed/cut into smaller pieces hoping not to disintegrate the shell!
- drill the hole and sand into perfectly paired pieces
- repeat...over and over until sanded and sized perfectly
- string on cord or chain until they fall into place like they never left each other's side! I usually have to string and unstring the shell chips dozens of times.
